Pilates

Pilates (pill-AH-teez) is an exercise technique invented for injured ballet dancers in the 1920's by ex-carpenter and gymnast Joseph Pilates, the program based on 34 original movements. Joseph Pilates was the first person in the west to promote a holistic approach to exercise, based on his philosophy that our lifestyles are chiefly responsible for our body's difficulties, and are reflected in our posture and movement. Classical Pilates is in one of the best forms of exercise you can practice, whatever your fitness level.

Why? to aid freedom.
Freedom from aches, pains and injuries; freedom of movement; freedom to live an active happy lifestyle.

How? to promote strength and mobility.
By focussing on a clients individual needs, I can help you to build strength from the inside out, improving mobility, posture, and flexibility.

What? classes for all.
Small-group Pilates matwork classes only 7 clients per class in a beautiful, relaxing environment or one to one/two personal training Pilates sessions.

Classical Pilates?
I teach Classical Pilates (original Pilates) with some contemporary variations, adhering to most of Joseph Pilates original principles. It is suitable for everyone and is the perfect rehabilitation exercise for those with medical or health concerns. It is the type of Pilates you can practice if you have been referred by a health professional such as a doctor, a physiotherapist, an osteopath, or a chiropractor.

What does Pilates do?
Pilates teaches you to hold your posture correctly, it helps to balance the torso and improves core stability by building abdominal, pelvic and back strength. Many medical experts believe when the spine is in alignment and supported properly by strong abdominal muscles, the involuntary functions of the body such as breathing, heartbeat, digestion, elimination of waste and psychological health are all improved. Breathing is a large part of Pilates, teaching you to protect the spine through correct breathing, which in turn helps to increase energy.

Properly executed, all Pilates exercises are performed with precision and control, not only developing greater strength but reducing the risk of injury. Each exercise teaches you through thought to become more aware of what we unconsciously do with our bodies. This allows you to develop the areas that need special attention and readdress your bodies balance. Pilates moves are designed to work your powerhouse muscles (the core) predominantly the abdominals, lower back and glutes. The result is a body better aligned and at less risk of injury. Practising such exercises on a regular basis will bring freedom of movement to your body and in turn your lifestyle.

Pregnancy?
Pilates can be practiced during pregnancy, but specialist pre-natal classes are required which are not currently on the timetable at Revive. If you wish to attend a Pilates class at Revive after your pregnancy this will be assessed on an individual basis so please email me if you wish to discuss your suitability.
